Dr.María J. Vicent received her Ph.D. degree in2001 in chemistry after her research on solid supports from the UniversitatJaume I (Castellon, Valencia, Spain) after several scientific stays in thelaboratory of Prof. Fréchet’s lab. at the University California (Berkeley,USA). María then moved into more biomedically-oriented research, initially withthe Spanish company Instituto Biomar S.A., and subsequently at the Centre forPolymer Therapeutics at the University of Cardiff (Wales, UK) with Prof. R.Duncan after receiving a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2002. In 2004,María joined the Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe (CIPF, Valencia,Spain) as a research associate through a Marie Curie Reintegration contract andwas promoted to her current position as the head of the Polymer TherapeuticsLaboratory at CIPF in 2006. María is currently responsible for the ScreeningPlatform and coordinates the Advanced Therapies Program at the CIPF.Furthermore, she has been the coordinator of the Valencian Community Strategyon Innovative Medicines with the laboratory becoming one of the SpecialistSites in the EU-OPENSCREENEuropean Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).
María’s research group focuseson the development of novel nanopharmaceuticals for different therapeutic anddiagnostic applications - in particular the application of Polymer Therapeuticsin unmet clinical needs. María has been funded by both national and Europeangrants (several acting as coordinator, including an ERC Consolidatorgrant-MyNano and ERC-PoC-POLYIMMUNE) from academia as well as industry (funding»7M€). María has received several prizes, including the IVth and the IXth IdeaAwards, and she has been elected as member of American Institute for Medicaland Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows Class of 2019. María hasco-authored >110 peer-reviewed papers (h index: 37; >5000 citations,Google Scholar ) and ten patents. Two patents have been licensed to thepharmaceutical industry and a third used as the foundation for the founding ofthe spin-off company ‘Polypeptide Therapeutic Solutions S.L.’ (Valencia, Spain)in 2012. María was the Spanish President of the Spanish-Portuguese Chapter ofthe Controlled Release Society up to the end of 2013 and the chairperson in keyconferences in the nanomedicine field, such as the International Symposium onPolymer Therapeutics: From Laboratory to Clinical Practice (Valencia, Spain)and the annual Controlled Release Society meeting in 2019. María is also theexecutive editor of Adv. Drug Deliv Rev, the associate editor of NanoMedicine:NBM and DDTR, and a member of the editorial boards of key journal in the fieldincluding, J. Control Rel., Polymer Chemistry, Biomaterial Sciences, and Mol.Pharmaceutics. María has supervised ten Ph.D. students, with nine more ongoing,with many funded through various competitive grants.
